Are Black Friday TVs Worse? Sometimes — Here's the Evidence

Not always. "Derivative" TVs made for sales often drop features like an HDMI port or the better remote, but Consumer Reports has tested derivatives that performed almost identically to the regular model. The risk is that they're hard to compare, not that they're always bad. Check the specs that changed.

Check a model number

What a derivative TV is

Consumer Reports describes holiday "derivatives" as sets similar to regular production models, but with different model numbers and often fewer features—for example fewer HDMI inputs or a simpler remote consumer-reports-most-tv-for-money.

When testing found them just as good (2017)

In a 2017 example, Consumer Reports tested the Samsung UN55MU6290 as a derivative of the UN55MU6300. CR reported the sets "performed almost identically," with the derivative about $170 cheaper; the pricier MU6300 had a more sophisticated remote, voice control, and Bluetooth consumer-reports-most-tv-for-money. Treat this as a dated lab example, not a promise about every 2026 doorbuster.

When features were cut down (2015)

An older Wirecutter example, reported by NBC News in 2015, flagged the Vizio D58u-D3: 10 local dimming zones versus 32 on the M-Series (and 16 on the E-Series), and a 60Hz panel versus 120Hz on 60-inch and larger M-Series sets nbc-derivative-tvs-2015. That is a cut-down-feature case from a prior holiday season—not a current catalog verdict.

Two recent (2024) pairs from TV Checker data

Samsung DU6900 vs DU7200 — sourced as a lower-tier same-generation sibling (notably 2 HDMI vs 3; Tab-TV also notes a different remote). We do not label this pair a confirmed Black Friday derivative tab-tv-du6900-du7200 displayspecifications-un50du6900-du7200. Model pages: UN50DU6900, UN50DU7200.

For an independent comparison UI, see RTINGS' DU7200 vs DU6900 compare tool. RTINGS does not test most retailer-only SKUs—when a doorbuster has no review, check the closest tested sibling and the exact model's own sheet. We do not quote RTINGS scores here.

LG UT7570 vs UT7000 — same designation: LG's cited sheets both list 4K UHD, 60Hz native refresh, 3 HDMI with eARC, and α5 AI Processor 4K Gen7 (plus matching HDR10/HLG and webOS 24 on those sheets). We do not label this pair confirmed_derivative lg-ut7570-spec-sheet lg-ut7000-spec-sheet. Model pages: 55UT7570PUB, 55UT7000PUA.

The real catch: price comparison

NBC News quoted Consumer Reports' Jim Willcox: unique model numbers make direct price comparisons harder, and price-match offers usually require the exact same model nbc-derivative-tvs-2015. That friction—not an automatic picture-quality collapse—is the practical shopper risk.

What about "substandard parts"?

We found no public lab dataset proving Black Friday TVs systematically use worse components across brands. The differences that are documented in the sources above are things you can check on a spec sheet: ports, remotes, local dimming zones, and native refresh rate. Anecdotes about parts quality without reproducible test data are not treated as facts here.

What to compare before you buy

SpecWhy it matters
HDMI countFewer ports is a common cut; note which support eARC / 4K120.
Native refresh rateUse native Hz from the spec sheet—not Motion Rate or Clear Motion marketing.
Local dimmingZone count and whether dimming exists can change contrast on LED sets.
Panel / backlightEdge vs direct, and panel class, affect brightness and uniformity.
Remote / voiceCR’s 2017 Samsung example differed mainly on remote, voice, and Bluetooth.
Model yearConfirm the year code on the exact SKU, not only the series nickname.

FAQ

Are Black Friday TVs lower quality?
Not always. Some holiday SKUs drop ports, remotes, dimming zones, or refresh rate; Consumer Reports has also tested a derivative that performed almost identically to its mainline twin. Compare the exact model’s specs before you assume either outcome.
Are Black Friday TVs refurbished?
A derivative or doorbuster model number is not the same as refurbished. Treat a set as refurbished only if the listing or packaging says so.
Is it better to buy a TV on Black Friday or wait?
We do not publish invented price calendars here. Compare the exact model code you are considering—ports, native refresh rate, and other sourced fields—then check current retailer prices for that same number.
How do I check a TV before buying?
Copy the full model number, open that exact model's spec sheet, and compare key fields with the mainline set. Step-by-step: how to tell if a TV is a Black Friday model.
