How to Tell If a TV Is a Black Friday Model
Copy the full model number—including every suffix letter—then search it. If results are mostly Black Friday ads and no reviews, it is likely a derivative (NBC News; Consumer Reports). Next, compare that exact model’s spec sheet with the mainline set: HDMI count, native refresh Hz, local dimming, and remote. Not every derivative is worse. Paste the number into the checker below.
Check a model number
What is a Black Friday "derivative" TV?
A derivative TV is a retailer- or sale-specific model number that sits beside a better-known mainline set. Sometimes the change is mostly a renamed designation; sometimes ports, remotes, or other features are cut down. Consumer Reports and NBC News (quoting CR’s Jim Willcox) have described this as a long-running holiday practice, with earlier coverage around 2015–2017.
Are Black Friday TVs worse?
Not always. Consumer Reports tested a Samsung UN55MU6290 that it described as a derivative of the MU6300 and found roughly equal performance while costing about $170 less; the differences it highlighted were remote and voice features, not a collapse in picture quality. consumer-reports-most-tv-for-money
Our research also records LG UT7570 and UT7000 as having identical core specs across two cited sheets—see 55UT7570PUB vs 55UT7000PUA.
Counter-example: Samsung DU6900 vs DU7200 shows a sourced spec gap (notably HDMI count) and should be read as a lower-tier same-generation model, not a confirmed Black Friday derivative—no source in our records uses that Black Friday label for the pair.
4-step check
- Copy the complete model number. Write down or photograph the full model number from the ad, box, or shelf tag, including every suffix letter.
- Search the exact number. Search the exact model number. If results are mostly Black Friday ads and you cannot find independent reviews, it may be a derivative model (NBC News; WTOP).
- Open the exact model's spec sheet. Open the manufacturer page or spec sheet for that exact model number, not only the series marketing page (Analysis of Fear).
- Compare key fields with the mainline model. Compare HDMI ports (and which support 4K120/eARC), native refresh Hz (not Motion Rate or Clear Motion), local dimming, processor, remote/voice features, and warranty (Consumer Reports; Analysis of Fear).
Why price-matching often fails on these models
Retailers that price-match usually require the same exact model number. A derivative SKU that appears only in a holiday flyer may not qualify against the mainline set, even when the screens look similar on the shelf (NBC News).
Model-number suffixes are not always a red flag
Samsung endings such as DAE/DDE and LG endings such as AU often appear in US ENERGY STAR records as year or variant codes, not as proof of a foreign-market set. When a certification record says two numbers are the same basic model except the designation, we publish them as “Same TV, different name”—for example QN55S85DDE vs QN55S85DAE.
Brand decoders
Use a brand decoder to read size, series, and year letters in the model string:
Note: Vizio became a Walmart/Sam’s Club private-label brand in late 2025 (Bloomberg; Tom's Guide). A “Walmart exclusive” label alone is not a derivative signal for Vizio.
FAQ
- Does ENERGY STAR mean better picture quality?
- No. ENERGY STAR relates to power use, not picture quality. Treat it as an efficiency label, not a picture-performance score (Analysis of Fear).
- Can I return a derivative TV?
- Return rules depend on the retailer and the condition of the set. Check that retailer’s return policy before buying; this guide does not claim a specific return window.
- Is a 60Hz TV bad?
- It depends on how you watch. Everyday TV and movies are often fine on a native 60Hz panel. Competitive console or PC gaming that needs smoother motion typically wants a native 120Hz panel.
- Are Black Friday TVs refurbished?
- Not by default. A derivative or doorbuster model number is a different product code, not proof that the TV is refurbished. Only treat a set as refurbished if the listing or packaging says so.
